"Scientifiction" was the term used to describe the Science Fiction genre prior to the launch of Hugh Gernsback's pulp magazine, "Science Wonder Stories" in June of 1929. In the pulp's first editorial, Hugo "Mr. Science Fiction" as he was later named, wrote, "I began the Science Fiction genre in the United States in 1908, in my first magazine, 'Modern Electronics.' At the time it was above all, an experiment. Science Fiction writers were few in number, there were hardly a dozen worth mentioning in the entire world." In the early days, Science Fiction writers received a great boost when 'Astounding Stories of Super Science' appeared in January 1930. The publishers offered authors double the going rate of one cent a word, which attracted many now famous writers who were to become the masters of the golden age of Science Fiction. The birth of the Science Fiction genre and motion pictures occured almost simultaneously. The creator of the first Sci-Fi film, 'A Trip to the Moon' (1902), George Melies, is considered the father of special effects. He invented stop motion photography which enabled him to make objects seem to disappear on the screen. This technique would allow 1950's special effects wizards such as Ray Harryhausen to animate objects and clay models. This collection presents many classics from the Golden Age of Sci-Fi in rare Near Mint or Mint condition with bold vivid graphics inspired by the early 'pulps'...monsters, robots, blondes and little green men...produced in an era before a rocket had successfully left the Earth's atmosphere.
Collectors generally refer to Science Fiction films and movie posters as Sci-Fi and novels in the genre
